Self Service Systems in Libraries

Self Service Systems in Libraries: User requirements and implications. Authors: Peter Brophy, Rachel Kirby, Krister Lagerborg, David Miller-Crook, John Williams ISBN: 0906694 809, 81pp, Price: £20

This first report examines the scope for self-service in libraries by examining the functions of libraries which are amenable to self-service. Takes into account the library, system and user viewpoints and draws on conclusions from an analysis of the experience of other sectors to see what lessons can be learned.

Self Service Systems in Libraries: Operational analysis. Authors: Peter Brophy, Rachel Kirby, Krister Lagerborg, David Miller-Crook, John Williams ISBN: 0906694 906, 40pp

Self Sevice Systems in Libraries: Open systems environment and security. Authors: Geoff Butters, Monica Brinkley, Panayoitis Papachiou, Ellie Vlachou, Ann Irving ISBN: 0906694 85X 81pp

Covering the second phase of the SELF Project, these two reports cover the implementation and operation of a self-service issue system within the University of Central Lancashire Library. The first of the two reports includes a short account of the operation of self-service issues and returns at Kalmar public library in Sweden. It also provides some observations and calculations on the effect of self-service om staffing levels and costs. The second of the reports looks at the open systems environment and security issues and their implications for the development of self-service systems in libraries and aims to answer the question; "What do we need to do to make self-service systems open and secure".

Self Service Systems in Libraries: Generalised Functional Specification Authors: Peter Brophy, Rachel Kirby, Krister Lagerborg, David Miller-Crook, John Williams ISBN: 0906694 752,123pp, Price: £20

Contains results of the third phase of the SELF Project, covering the development and testing of a generalised functional specification for self-service systems in libraries. Aims to both examine the scope for further development of self-service in libraries and to provide a useful functional analysis which could be used by systems developers within the normal life cycle model of systems development. This has been achieved by taking the basic generalised functional specification and undertaking a desk exercise to test it against the kind of self-service systems identified in the first report to ensure the basic analysis is sound.

Self Service Systems in Libraries: Final Report Authors: Peter Brophy, Rachel Kirby, Krister Lagerborg, David Miller-Crook, John Williams ISBN: 0906694 957, 119pp, Price: £25

In this final report the Generalised Functional Specification is presented in detail, as the core output of the Project. Inter-library loans and book issues are used as examples to illustrate the development of applications. The report concludes with eleven specific recommendations which derive from the work of the project.
