SUNCAT - the National Serials Union Catalogue
CERLIM has been awarded funding to undertake evaluation of the progress of the SUNCAT Project. The SUNCAT Project is developing a national union catalogue of serials held in research libraries throughout the UK. It is funded by the JISC and with funds from the Research Support Libraries Programme and is being undertaken by EDINA at the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Ex Libris.
Such a catalogue is important because:
- Serials are a key resource for research in all contexts
- Quality of information about serials in UK libraries is variable
- Poor-quality information hinders researchers' ability to find the serials they need
- High-quality information facilitates effective location and access
- High-quality information helps librarians to plan their collections based on resource-sharing agreements
SUNCAT will be a single tool for researchers to locate serials held in libraries throughout the UK. It will also be a central source of high-quality records that librarians may download to upgrade records in their own catalogues.
