LISTEN: Library & Information Studies Training & Education Network
a DfEE funded project
NOTE: This project was completed while the Centre for Research in Library and Information Management (CERLIM) was based at the University of Central Lancashire during 1993-98. On 1 April 1998, CERLIM moved to a new base at Manchester Metropolitan University.
LISTEN is a network of practitioners, educators and graduates, formed to develop core materials for continuing professional development in library and information work. It received funding for two years (April 1996 - March 1998) from the Department for Education and Employment (DFEE), to enable the network to establish itself and produce some useful training materials. The network is one of several dozen groups funded by DFEE, each one representing the concerns of an academic discipline and its employer community. LISTEN operated in the area of 'higher level' knowledge and skills - post-qualification competencies required when staff have been in post for several or more years - and especially in developing the strategy for building permanent links between educators and employers at a national level to ensure a continuous exchange of information about issues such as employability, progression, new knowledge and skills, and labour market intelligence in general.
Collaborators in this exciting development include the British Association for Information & Library Education & Research (BAILER), the British Library Research & Development Department (BLR&DD), the Computers in Teaching Initiative Centre for Library & Information Studies (CTILIS), the Information & Library Services Lead Body for Scottish & National Vocational Qualifications (ILS-LB), the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS), the Library Association (LA), the Standing Conference on National & University Libraries (SCONUL), and the Universities of Abertay, Aberystwyth, Brighton, Birmingham, Central England, Central Lancashire, Hull, Leeds Metropolitan, Loughborough, Northumbria and Sheffield.
Details of the moving into management toolkit can be obtained from the Library Association Website on Training and Development.
