ENAE - The European Network on Ageing and Ethnicity - Database
EC DGV Project
The European Network on Ageing and Ethnicity - Database (ENAE-Db) was to provide a database of details of organisations, projects and examples of good practice across Europe to help all those working in the field to:
- gather information on issues which affect older people from minority ethnic communities;
- improve policy and practice in this area;
- allow users to share information and expertise across Europe.
The database project began in January 1996. It was funded by DGV the Directorate General for Employment, Industrial Relations and Social Affairs of the European Commission.
This project was one of six initiated by the European Network on Ageing and Ethnicity, which developed from the European Year of Older People and Intergenerational Solidarity in 1993. Awareness of the "social exclusion" faced by ethnic elderly communities in Europe, together with the increasing numbers of elderly in general, led to the initiative of co - ordinating organisations in this field. "Social exclusion" is a term applied to everyone who is excluded from the normal activities and services in their society because of a physical, social or economic disability. Two communities who are currently "excluded" from many aspects of everyday life are elderly people and those from ethnic groups. The ENAE focused on the overlap between the two.
The project was completed in in 1996 and the database passed to SeniorWeb in the Netherlands.
