The eMapps.com Project Evaluation - A Workbook for Teachers
Making the games easier for the children to play
An important part of creating any online environment, such as the eMapps.com game, is to make it as ‘user friendly’ as possible. All of the children should be able to use the tools they need to play the game, to understand the information you send them, and to carry out the activities you have planned for them.
Here are ten simple things which teachers, as games designers and creators, can do to make it easier for all children to play and enjoy their games. These are:-
Make sure that all of the children really understand how to use their mobiles, cameras etc. before they go out to play the game
When they are using small screens, such as mobile phone screens, try to avoid sending them large images that cannot be seen all at one glance. Some children may have difficulty scrolling around a large picture in order to work out what it is
Use clear colours with plenty of contrast
Put only one idea in each message you send the children
Avoid using small text. It should be possible to read messages on the screen when outside where the light may be poor or very bright.
Use simple language and short sentences
Use the same words and phrases throughout your instructions
Make sure that the child can move backwards to previous screens as well as forwards to the next one
Make sure that the child can pause the game and come back to the same place later
Make sure that the child knows where to find help at all stages of the game, and what to do if he or she makes a mistake
