Libraries Without Walls III: The Delivery of Library Services to Distant Users
The Third Conference
10 - 14 September 1999, Molyvos, Lesvos, Greece
Lifelong learning is becoming a reality throughout the world, requiring that learning opportunities be delivered to all citizens in their locality, at work or at home, resulting in the restructuring of higher education. Increasing numbers of students are undertaking distance education programmes and libraries are being called upon to find innovative and imaginative ways to support such learning, and to treat 'distant' learners on an equal footing with those on-campus. Developments in technology are creating new possibilities for document delivery and the distributed virtual library. The 'Libraries without Walls' conferences addressed this important theme.
The first two conferences, held in Greece in 1995 and 1997 were highly successful. They brought together speakers from The UK, Australia, Europe and the USA who addressed the principal strategic issues, based on international, regional and cross-sectoral approaches, arising from the provision of library services to distant users.
Conference papers submitted by leading professionals from The UK, Australia, Europe and North America included the following themes:
- Lifelong Learning
- Integrating services to provide the distributed virtual library
- Regional library provision through networking
- Social and human issues of distributed library services
- Supporting open and distance learning
- Cupertino between libraries of different types
- Standard issues
- Delivering library services to the home and workplace
- Staff training in distributed libraries
